What is Dementia?

Dementia is defined as a long-term progressive deterioration of ones cognitive functionality. These often affect normal functionality of the brain and memory. The brain is made up of billions of neurons, or nerve cells that communicate with each other through chemical signals. Dementia causes these neurons to deteriorate, making it harder for the brain to function normally.

Due to the nature of dementia and deterioration, it often starts with little to no symptoms, then progressively becoming more intense. this can develop over a short period (or sudden onset), or develop over a prolonged period (can be years). The symptoms that someone with dementia experiences will depend on two factors: the disease that is causing dementia and the parts of the brain that are affected.
